Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) for Contractors
Google’s own documentation on AI features in Search says there is no special markup, file, or tag that gets a page into an AI Overview. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and then it competes on quality. That one fact cuts through most of the noise around answer engine optimization.
It also explains why the contractors who get quoted by AI systems are rarely the ones with the cleverest tricks. They are the ones whose websites answer specific questions plainly, whose business details match everywhere, and whose reviews are real. Every one of those is an asset you own.
This guide explains what AEO is, what you can and cannot control, and a seven-step plan you can start this week.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity can understand it and quote it in their answers. It relies on clear direct answers, structured data, consistent business details and real reviews. No one can guarantee a citation.
What AEO Actually Is
An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT’s search feature, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot all work this way. They pull from sources they can read and trust, and they usually link to some of them.
AEO is the work of becoming one of those sources. If you have heard other names for it, here is how they relate.
| Term | What it usually means | Where it overlaps |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Earning rankings in traditional search results | The foundation for everything below |
| AEO | Being quoted in direct answers, such as AI Overviews and featured snippets | Same pages, written to be extracted |
| GEO | Being cited by generative AI systems | Largely the same work as AEO |
| LLMO | Being understood and mentioned by large language models | Same inputs: content, consistency, reputation |
The labels differ more than the work does. If you want the longer breakdown of each, see our guides to generative engine optimization and LLMO.
Why It Matters to a Contractor
When a homeowner asks “how much does it cost to replace a water heater” and gets a written answer at the top of the page, some of them stop reading there. If your business is named or linked in that answer, you get the call. If it is not, you may never know the search happened.
We are not going to quote you a percentage of searches that now show AI answers, because the numbers shift and we cannot source a current one honestly. What we can say is that the direction is clear and the preparation is cheap, because the same work helps ordinary search too.
What You Control and What You Do Not
| Factor | Who controls it | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Whether your pages can be crawled and indexed | You | Do not block search crawlers; fix indexing errors |
| How clearly your pages answer questions | You | Write direct answers near the top |
| Your business details across the web | You | Make name, address and phone identical everywhere |
| Your reviews and reputation | Mostly you | Earn real reviews, reply to them |
| Which sources an AI chooses to quote | The AI company | Nothing directly |
| When and how the systems change | The AI company | Nothing; stay flexible |
The bottom two rows are why we do not sell guarantees. Anyone promising a ChatGPT placement is selling something they do not control.
The 7-Step Plan
1. Answer the real questions in 40 to 60 words
List the ten questions customers actually ask you on the phone. “How much does a furnace replacement cost?” “Do you offer emergency service?” “How long does a roof replacement take?” For each, write a standalone answer of 40 to 60 words near the top of the relevant page. It should make sense if someone lifts it out of context, with a real number or range in it.
2. Give each question a page that earns it
A direct answer needs depth underneath. One page per core service, each with real detail: what the job involves, what it costs as a range and why, how long it takes, what affects the price, and photos of your own work. Generic copy such as “we provide quality service” gives an AI nothing to quote.
3. Structure the page so it can be read by a machine
Use clear headings that match the questions people ask, short paragraphs, and a table when you are comparing numbers. Put a Frequently Asked Questions section at the bottom with the real questions and plain answers.
4. Add structured data
Schema markup tells machines who you are, what you do and where in a format they read directly. At a minimum, mark up your business details and your services. Google has narrowed which rich results certain schema types produce, so treat it as clarity for machines rather than a ranking trick.
5. Make your business details agree everywhere
An AI that sees three different phone numbers or two spellings of your company name has less reason to trust any of them. Use one exact name, address and phone format on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory. Our guide to AI entity optimization goes deeper.
6. Build reviews and a complete profile
Real reviews on your Google Business Profile, a complete service list, and original photos are evidence that you are an active, real business. They also feed local rankings directly. The profile is yours, and the reviews attach to it permanently.
7. Let the crawlers in, then measure honestly
Check that your robots.txt file and any security or CDN settings are not blocking the crawlers you want. Then check monthly: ask the major AI tools your top questions and write down whether you are named. Look for referral traffic from sources like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in your analytics. This is a sample, not a ranking report, because answers vary by user and by day.
You Can Do This Yourself
Steps one through six are well within reach. Our estimate is 6 to 10 hours for the first pass on your top five services, then 2 to 4 hours a month. If you would rather have it done, Contractor Bear builds this on the same channels we use for everything else, starting at $500/mo, and the website, profile and content we build are yours to keep. Not rented. Yours.
Where Paid Fits In
Paid placements exist alongside AI answers. Google has said ads can appear in and around AI Overviews, and Local Services Ads sit above the Map Pack. They can add leads, but they are rented, and they stop when the budget does. We cover the paid side in our guide to AI Overviews ads. The order we recommend is owned first, rented second, because a cited page and a strong profile keep working when the billing stops.
How Long It Takes
These are our estimates. AI systems update on their own schedules.
| Action | Effort | When you may see movement |
|---|---|---|
| Fix crawling and indexing problems | 1-2 hours | Days to weeks |
| Align business details across the web | 3-6 hours | 1-3 months |
| Rewrite top service pages with direct answers | 1-2 hours per page | 2-6 months |
| Build review volume | 15 minutes per job | 2-4 months |
| Add structured data | 2-4 hours | 1-3 months |
Be wary of anyone promising results in a few weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is answer engine optimization?
It is the work of making your content easy for AI systems to understand and quote in their direct answers. That means plain-language answers near the top of the page, structured data, consistent business details, and real reviews. It builds on good SEO rather than replacing it, and nobody can guarantee a citation.
Is AEO different from SEO?
Mostly it is SEO with extra attention to extraction. The same pages, the same crawlability, the same reputation signals. The difference is writing answers that stand on their own and structuring content so machines can lift them. If your SEO fundamentals are weak, fix those first, because they feed everything else.
Do I need special markup to show up in AI Overviews?
No. Google’s documentation says there is no special markup required. Your page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Schema markup is still useful for clarity, but it is not a switch that gets you cited. Writing a clear, specific, accurate answer matters more than any tag.
How do I know if AI tools are quoting my business?
Check by hand. Each month, ask the main AI tools your top customer questions and note which businesses they name. Watch your analytics for referral traffic from AI sources. It is an imperfect sample because answers vary, but it shows direction over time.
The Short Version
AEO is not a new trick. It is clear answers, consistent details and real reviews on assets you control. Start with your top five questions and your Google Business Profile, then build from there.
If you want a team to build and run it, see our pricing. Plans start at $500/mo, and the website, profile and content we build stay yours when you leave. For the bigger picture, see our AI search hub.
