How Much Does a Google Business Profile Cost?
Short Answer
How much does a Google Business Profile cost? A Google Business Profile is free to create, verify and keep. Your real costs are time, roughly 3 to 6 hours to set up and 2 to 4 hours a month by our estimate, plus optional management fees. Ads that appear near it are separate paid products.
A Google Business Profile costs $0 to create, verify and keep. Google does not charge a fee for the listing, for appearing in the map results, or for collecting reviews. If anyone asks you to pay Google for a listing, that is the first sign something is wrong.
That does not make it free in practice. The profile costs your time, and the paid products that sit next to it, like Local Service Ads, are easy to confuse with the listing itself. This post separates what is actually free from what costs money, and shows what the time and the optional help are worth.
The ranges below for hours and management fees are our estimates, labeled as such. The profile itself is free, and the paid ad products price per lead or per click, so their cost depends on your trade and market.
What Is Free and What Is Not
The confusion comes from the fact that Google sells several things in the same neighborhood. Here is how they separate.
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Creating the profile | $0 | Free for any eligible local business |
| Verifying the profile | $0 | By phone, text, email or video, depending on what Google offers you |
| Appearing in the map results | $0 | Based on relevance, distance and prominence, not payment |
| Collecting and answering reviews | $0 | Free; software to automate requests is optional |
| Photos, posts, services, Q&A | $0 | Free, though they take time |
| Local Service Ads (Google Guaranteed) | Per lead | A paid ad; see our Google Guaranteed explainer |
| Google Ads | Per click | A paid ad; separate from the profile |
| A website | Varies | Optional; strongly helps conversion |
The key line: you cannot buy a higher organic map ranking. You can buy ad placement above it. Those are different products with different results.
The Real Cost: Your Time
If the profile is free, the cost is the hours. Here is our estimate of the work, based on what a complete profile involves.
| Task | One-time setup | Ongoing |
|---|---|---|
| Claim, verify and fill every field | 1-2 hours | Review quarterly |
| Categories, services, service areas | 1 hour | Update when services change |
| Photos | 1-2 hours | 15-30 minutes a week |
| Review requests and replies | 30 minutes | 20-40 minutes a week |
| Posts and Q&A | 30 minutes | 15-30 minutes a week |
| Consistent name, address, phone elsewhere | 1-2 hours | Check quarterly |
That adds up to roughly 3 to 6 hours of setup and 2 to 4 hours a month to maintain, which are our estimates and will vary with how many reviews and photos you handle. Multiply by what an hour of your time is worth. If you earn $75 an hour on the tools, a 3-hour monthly routine costs you $225 in opportunity cost, and 5 hours costs $375.
That is not a reason to skip it. It is the reason to decide on purpose whether you do it or someone else does.
Doing It Yourself: What It Really Takes
Doing it yourself is realistic, and plenty of contractors do. The barrier is rarely knowledge. It is consistency. The habits that matter:
- Ask for a review after every job, while the customer is happy. Our guide on getting more 5-star reviews shows a simple process.
- Upload photos weekly, from real jobs. See Google Business Profile photos for contractors.
- Keep the details accurate: hours, phone, services, service areas.
- Reply to every review, good or bad.
- Audit it every few months. Our Google Business Profile audit tool shows what to check.
For the full setup, our Google Business Profile guide for contractors walks through every field. Out-of-pocket cost for doing it yourself can be close to zero. Optional extras include review-request software and call tracking, which we cover below.
Paying Someone to Manage It
Management fees vary widely, and most contractors have no benchmark. Here is the range we see, from our agency-cost comparison, as an estimate.
| Option | Typical monthly cost (estimate) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | $0 plus your time | Everything, if you do it consistently |
| Freelancer or small agency | $500-$1,500 | Profile management, often bundled with other services |
| Mid-range agency | $2,000-$4,000 | Profile, SEO, content and reporting |
| Contractor Bear Cub | $500 | GBP optimization, local SEO foundation, review generation (bring your own website) |
Contractor Bear’s Cub tier is $500 a month and includes Google Business Profile optimization, a local SEO foundation and review generation. Higher tiers add a custom website and more, and tiers rise only when we deliver more attributed leads. There is no revenue share.
If you want help, you can hire it. You can also see how it fits with our Google Maps SEO service and our pillar page on Google Business Profiles.
You can do every step yourself. If you would rather it just get done, Contractor Bear builds and runs these channels for you starting at $500/mo, and the profile and website we build are yours to keep. Not rented. Yours.
A Realistic First-Year Budget
Put the options side by side over twelve months. The fee figures are the monthly estimates above multiplied by twelve, and the hours use our setup and maintenance estimates.
| Option | First-year out-of-pocket | Your time in year one |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | $0 | About 27-54 hours (3-6 setup plus 2-4 a month) |
| Contractor Bear Cub | $6,000 ($500 x 12) | Minimal; mostly approving and answering calls |
| Freelancer or small agency | $6,000-$18,000 | Low; some review and approval |
| Mid-range agency | $24,000-$48,000 | Low, but covers far more than the profile |
The last row is a reminder to compare like with like. A mid-range agency is not a profile service. It is SEO, content and reporting, and the profile is one line item. If all you need is a well-run profile, you may be paying for things you will not use.
The number that matters is not the fee. It is what each hour of your time is worth and what a booked job is worth to you. If one extra job a month more than covers the fee, the fee pays for itself. If it does not, do it yourself.
The One Thing to Check Before You Pay Anyone
Ask who will be the owner of the profile. If an agency creates or controls it under their account, you may have trouble getting it back if you leave. You should be the primary owner, and the agency should be added as a manager. The same applies to the website, the domain and any ad accounts.
This is not an accusation of anyone. It is a reasonable question, and a good provider answers it without hesitation. It is the difference between paying for a service and renting your own business presence.
Paid Products Near Your Profile
These are not part of the profile, and they are optional. Know what they are before you click.
| Product | How it is priced | Our estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Local Service Ads | Per lead | Roughly $10-$120 per lead depending on trade and market |
| Google Ads | Per click | Roughly $4-$65 per click depending on trade and market |
| Review-request software | Monthly subscription | Optional; compare options in our review platform guide |
| Call tracking | Monthly subscription | Optional; included from our Black tier |
Our estimates for per-lead and per-click costs come from our Google Ads cost breakdown and Local Service Ads guide, not from Google’s published rates. Paid products rent you placement. When you stop paying, they stop. The profile, the reviews and the rankings you earn for free keep working.
Watch for Scams
Because the listing is free, anyone who charges for it deserves suspicion. Common patterns include:
- A caller claiming to be from Google who says your listing will be removed unless you pay.
- A “verification fee” or a “ranking guarantee” sold by a third party.
- A provider who promises first-page map results in a fixed number of days.
Google does not charge for the listing, and nobody can guarantee a ranking. If you are unsure, go to your own account and check for notices there rather than acting on a call or email.
Is It Worth Paying for Help?
A simple test: compare the fee with the value of your time and the value of the leads.
| Question | If yes |
|---|---|
| Would you do 3-5 hours a month consistently? | DIY can be the cheapest option |
| Is your time better spent on jobs? | Paying for help may be cheaper than it looks |
| Are you in a competitive market? | Skilled help can matter more |
| Do you also need a website and reviews built? | A bundled option may beat piecing it together |
The profile is one part of a larger system. It works best alongside a website that ranks, a steady review habit and a customer list you own. That is the difference between owning a lead channel and renting one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Google Business Profile really free?
Yes. Creating, verifying and maintaining the profile is free, and appearing in the map results does not require payment. What costs money is optional: ads like Local Service Ads or Google Ads, software for review requests, a website, and any management fee you choose to pay. The profile itself carries no listing fee from Google.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on the map?
Not in the organic results. Map ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence, including reviews and profile completeness. You can pay for ad placement above those results through Local Service Ads or Google Ads, but that rents visibility. When you stop paying, the ads stop and your organic ranking is unchanged.
How much does it cost to have someone manage my Google Business Profile?
By our estimate, from about $500 a month for a freelancer or small agency up to several thousand a month for a full-service package that includes SEO and content. Our Cub tier is $500 a month and includes profile optimization, a local SEO foundation and review generation. Always confirm that you will be the profile’s owner.
Do I need a website to have a Google Business Profile?
No, you can create a profile without one. But a website that ranks, with a page for each service and area, gives the profile something to point to and improves conversion. The two work together, which is why we build both. From the Black tier the custom website is included free, and it is yours to keep.
The Short Version
A Google Business Profile costs nothing to create and nothing to keep. What it costs you is time, roughly 2 to 4 hours a month by our estimate, and whatever you choose to pay for help. Paid ads near it are separate products that rent you placement.
If you want it done and you want to keep it, Contractor Bear starts at $500/mo. The profile is yours, the website is yours, and when you stop paying us you keep all of it. See the tiers on our pricing page.
