Google Guaranteed: What It Is, Costs, and Who Needs It

Google Guaranteed is a badge, not a ranking and not a membership. It appears on Local Services Ads after Google verifies a business, and the ad and badge disappear the day you stop paying. In our estimates the leads behind it cost roughly $10 to $120 each, depending on trade and market.

If you searched the term, you probably saw the green checkmark above the map results and wondered whether you need it. This is the plain explainer: what it is, how it works, what it costs, and where it fits. We will not tell you it is bad. We will tell you what you are renting.

The cost figures here come from our own Local Service Ads guide and are estimates, not Google’s published rates. Google shows a price range for your category and area when you sign up, so check that for your numbers.

What is Google Guaranteed? Google Guaranteed is a badge shown on Local Services Ads after Google verifies a business’s license, insurance and background checks. You pay per lead, not per click, and Google may reimburse customers if a job goes wrong. It appears above the map results but is rented: when you stop paying, the badge and leads stop.

Four terms get mixed up. Here is how they differ.

Google Guaranteed and Local Services Ads are essentially the same thing for a contractor: the ad is the product, and the badge is what the customer sees. Our deeper breakdown of the product is in what is Google Guaranteed, and the dedicated page on Google Guaranteed ads shows how we use it alongside owned channels.

How It Works

  1. You apply and get verified. Google checks your business registration, license where required, insurance and background checks on the owner and, in many categories, technicians. Requirements vary by trade and state.
  2. Your ad appears at the top of the results. For searches like “emergency plumber near me,” Local Services Ads sit above regular Google Ads and above the map pack.
  3. You pay per lead. A lead is typically a call, message or booking request from a customer in your service area. You set a weekly budget and Google charges per qualifying lead.
  4. You can dispute bad leads. Wrong number, wrong service, outside your area. Credited leads are refunded, but you have to file the dispute.

The “guarantee” protects the homeowner. If a customer is unhappy with a job from an LSA lead, Google’s program may reimburse them up to a cap Google publishes. Check Google’s current terms, because the amount and conditions change. It is not a promise to you that leads will turn into jobs.

What It Costs

Cost per lead depends on your trade, your metro and the season. These ranges come from our LSA guide and are estimates.

TradeTypical cost per lead (estimate)Range
Plumbing$25-$55$15-$85
HVAC$30-$65$20-$95
Electrical$20-$45$12-$70
Roofing$35-$75$25-$120
Pest control$15-$30$8-$45
Landscaping$18-$40$10-$60

Major metros can run 1.5 to 2.5 times higher than small markets, according to the same guide. A lead is not a job. At a close rate in the 15 to 25 percent range, which is our estimate, your cost per booked job is roughly four to six times the lead price. Divide spend by jobs, then compare with profit per job.

Owned vs. Rented

The question for any channel is whether it builds something you keep.

Ranks on its own over timeYesNoNo
Owned or rentedOwnedRentedRented

Google Guaranteed is a good rental. It is verified, pay-per-lead, and shows fewer competitors than a marketplace. But it is still a cost that resets every month, and it works best on top of an owned foundation. Our pillar page on paid ads for contractors explains where paid belongs.

Who Actually Needs It

It tends to make sense when:

  • You have capacity today. More leads into a booked-out calendar just creates a backlog.
  • You sell emergency or high-ticket work. One water heater or roof repair can cover a month of lead costs.
  • Your organic profile is still young. Paid can fill the gap while reviews and rankings build, which takes months.
  • You answer the phone. Responsiveness affects placement, and a missed lead is a paid lead wasted.

It disappoints when you cannot answer calls quickly, when your close rate is low, or when it replaces a real profile and website instead of adding to them.

You can set it up yourself and plenty of contractors do. If you would rather have the owned channels built and the paid layer added when the numbers justify it, Contractor Bear does that starting at $500/mo, and the website and profile we build are yours to keep. Not rented. Yours.

A Quick Decision Guide

If you are weighing it right now, match your situation to the closest row. These are rules of thumb, not guarantees.

Your situationLean toward
New business, no reviews, need calls this monthUse it as a bridge while you build the owned side
Booked out three weeksHold off; more leads just create a backlog
Strong reviews, high-ticket work, open capacityLikely worth a measured test
Cannot answer calls quicklyFix the phone first, because missed leads are paid leads
Small tickets in an expensive metroTest small and track cost per booked job closely

Whichever row fits, the next step is the same: track booked jobs, not leads, for 90 days before you raise the budget.

Common Myths

  • “Guaranteed means guaranteed leads.” It does not. It means Google verified you, and it may reimburse customers under its program.
  • “The badge boosts my map ranking.” It does not. It is an ad, separate from your organic map ranking.
  • “Once approved, it runs itself.” It needs weekly attention: disputing bad leads, adjusting budget and hours, and answering fast.
  • “It replaces SEO.” It does not. It rents visibility while you build the owned side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is $10 a day enough for Google Ads?

It is enough to test, rarely enough to fill a schedule. $10 a day is about $304 a month. At our estimated $9 to $28 average cost per click by trade, that is roughly 11 to 34 clicks, and perhaps one to three leads. Local Service Ads stretch it further because you pay per lead, often 5 to 15 leads a month at $20 to $55.

How to promote your business locally for free?

Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, then ask every happy customer for a review. Build a page on your website for each service and area. Put signs on finished jobs, brand your truck and ask for referrals. Introduce yourself to realtors and property managers. All cost time, not per-lead fees, and they keep working after you stop.

Is Google Guaranteed the same as Local Services Ads?

For contractors, essentially yes. Local Services Ads are the ad product, and Google Guaranteed is the verified badge that appears on them. You pay per lead, and both appear above the map results. They are rented placement, so both stop when you stop paying.

Does Google Guaranteed help my map ranking?

No. The badge is part of an ad, separate from your organic map ranking, which depends on relevance, distance and prominence. Reviews and a complete profile help both, though, so building the profile serves the ad and the owned channel at the same time.

The Short Version

Google Guaranteed is a verified, pay-per-lead ad. It can bring in real jobs, especially when you have capacity and the phone gets answered. But it is rented. Build the profile, the reviews and the website first, because those keep working when the budget stops.

If you want the version you keep, Contractor Bear starts at $500/mo. The website is yours, the Google Business Profile is yours, and when you stop paying us you keep all of it. See the tiers on our pricing page.
