How to Rank in ChatGPT Search: A Contractor Guide
ChatGPT’s search feature has its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI’s documentation says a site that blocks it may not appear in ChatGPT search results. Blocking it takes one line in a robots.txt file, so checking yours is the first thing to do and the cheapest.
After that, ranking in ChatGPT search looks a lot like earning trust anywhere online. The system reads pages, weighs sources, writes an answer, and links to some of what it used. You cannot buy your way into that answer, and you cannot force it. You can make your business easy to find, easy to understand, and hard to doubt.
To rank in ChatGPT search, let OpenAI’s search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) reach your site, publish pages that answer specific questions in plain language, keep your business name, address and phone consistent across the web, and collect real reviews. No one can guarantee a citation.
How ChatGPT Search Works, in Plain Terms
When someone asks ChatGPT a question that needs current information, it can search the web, read what it finds, and write an answer with links to sources. OpenAI says its search draws on a mix of sources, including third-party search providers and content partners, and it publishes controls for site owners.
Two things follow. First, your pages must be reachable by the crawlers involved. Second, the answer is built from sources that look credible, specific and consistent. Neither is something you can fake.
The Crawlers: Who Is Who
OpenAI uses more than one crawler, and they do different jobs. Mixing them up is the most common mistake we see in robots.txt files.
| Crawler | What OpenAI says it is for | If you block it |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfacing sites in ChatGPT search results | Your site may not appear in ChatGPT search |
| GPTBot | Collecting content that may be used to train models | Your content is not used for training; search is separate |
| ChatGPT-User | Actions taken by users inside ChatGPT, such as visiting a page | Users may be unable to have ChatGPT open your pages |
If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, do not block OAI-SearchBot. Whether to allow GPTBot is a separate choice about model training. Check OpenAI’s current documentation, because these details change.
Also check anything between the crawler and your site. Some firewalls, security plugins and CDN settings block unfamiliar bots by default, and your robots.txt file may look fine while the server turns them away.
What a Safe robots.txt Looks Like
Here is an example that allows OpenAI’s search crawler while opting out of training use. Whether to opt out of training is your call, and this is an illustration rather than a recommendation.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
If your file has no rules naming these crawlers and no blanket block, they are allowed by default. The classic problem is a leftover rule like User-agent: * followed by Disallow: /. That blocks every crawler, including search engines, and it is normal on a staging site. It is also a common leftover after a redesign, when a developer forgets to remove it before launch.
To see whether the crawler is actually reaching you, ask your host or developer to search your server logs for the user agent “OAI-SearchBot.” A visit shows you are reachable. It does not mean you will be cited, because crawling and citing are separate steps.
The Steps
1. Open your robots.txt and read it
Go to yourwebsite.com/robots.txt. Look for any rule that disallows OAI-SearchBot or blocks all bots. If you cannot tell, ask whoever manages your site. If you cannot get a straight answer, that is itself a sign you may not control your own website.
2. Make sure the pages are on your own domain
ChatGPT can only cite what it can read. Content trapped in a PDF, a pop-up, a booking widget or a marketplace profile is hard to use. Put your core information, services, prices as ranges, areas and answers on regular pages on your own site.
3. Answer specific questions in plain language
People ask ChatGPT things like “how much does it cost to replace a water heater” or “what does a roofer do after hail damage.” Write a page for each question you hear often, with a direct answer of 40 to 60 words near the top, a real range, and the variables that move the price. Label estimates as estimates.
4. Keep your business details identical everywhere
Use one name, one address and one phone format across your website, your Google Business Profile, and directories such as Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Consistency is how a system decides which business is which. Our guide to AI entity optimization explains the idea.
5. Build reviews and a complete profile
For local questions, signals like reviews and a complete profile help a system judge whether a business is real and trusted. Ask every customer after the job, with a direct link to your Google profile, and reply to each review. See our Google Business Profile checklist.
6. Show proof, not slogans
Original photos, project pages, license and insurance details, and named team members give a system something specific to read. “Quality workmanship” is not a fact. “Licensed in this state, insured, and 14 years at the same address” is, if it is true.
How to Check Whether It Is Working
You cannot see a ChatGPT ranking the way you see a Google position. What you can do is sample.
| Check | How | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Ask your top questions | Type them into ChatGPT and note which businesses appear | Monthly |
| Referral traffic | Look for visits from chatgpt.com in your analytics | Monthly |
| Calls and form fills | Ask new customers how they found you | Every job |
| Google rankings | Track Map Pack and organic position | Monthly |
Treat the first row as a sample, not a scoreboard. Answers vary by person, by wording and by day. If you see yourself named now and then, the groundwork is probably working. If you never do, check the crawler first, then the pages.
What Does Not Work
- Paying for a guarantee. No one outside OpenAI controls what the system cites.
- Stuffing pages with questions and answers nobody asked. Thin pages are the least quotable.
- Fake or purchased reviews. Google prohibits them, and they can be removed.
- Ignoring Google. ChatGPT search is one channel among several, and your Google Business Profile still drives most local calls.
You Can Do This Yourself
Everything above is within reach. Our estimate is 4 to 8 hours for a first pass, then 2 to 3 hours a month. If you would rather have it handled, Contractor Bear builds these channels for you starting at $500/mo, and the website, profile and content we build are yours to keep. Not rented. Yours.
Where This Fits in Your Marketing
ChatGPT search is a young channel, and we would not rebuild your marketing around it. The sensible plan is to do the work that helps every channel at once: a site that answers questions, a profile that is complete, reviews that are real. Those are owned assets that keep paying. Our guide on how to show up in ChatGPT covers the wider picture, and our AI search hub collects the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT search results?
You cannot pay to be cited as a source in a ChatGPT answer. Citations come from what the system reads and trusts. Advertising products in AI tools are changing quickly, so check current announcements, but the organic route is the one that builds something you keep.
Do I need to allow OAI-SearchBot?
If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, yes. OpenAI says sites that block it may not appear in search results. Allowing it is separate from allowing GPTBot, which relates to training. Read OpenAI’s current documentation and make each choice deliberately.
How long does it take to show up?
There is no published timeline. Crawler fixes can have an effect within weeks. Building enough credible, specific content and reviews to be cited regularly typically takes months. We would rather say that than promise a date nobody can keep.
Is ranking in ChatGPT different from ranking on Google?
They overlap heavily. Both reward specific, accurate, trustworthy pages and consistent business details. The differences are in how answers are assembled and which crawlers you must allow. Fix your Google fundamentals first, because they carry over.
The Short Version
Let the right crawler in, answer real questions on your own site, keep your details identical everywhere, and earn real reviews. No one controls what ChatGPT cites, but you control whether you are worth citing.
If you want help, see our pricing. Plans start at $500/mo, and when you leave you keep the website, the profile and the reviews. You own it.
