What Is Google Guaranteed? A Contractor’s Honest Guide

Short Answer

What Is Google Guaranteed? A Contractor’s Honest Guide? Google Guaranteed is a badge on Local Services Ads that Google grants after verifying a contractor’s license, insurance and background checks, and the ads appear above the Map Pack. You pay per lead, not per click, and the guarantee lets Google reimburse unhappy customers up to a cap, but the badge and the leads stop when you stop paying.

Google Guaranteed is a pay-per-lead ad, not a ranking. The badge shows up above the Map Pack, and it disappears the day you stop paying. If you are deciding whether to sign up, that one fact is the whole decision.

That does not make it bad. For a plumber with a burst-pipe phone line or an HVAC company in a July heat wave, it can put you in front of a homeowner at the exact moment they are ready to hire. But it is rented placement, and you should know what you are renting before you hand over a card.

Google Guaranteed is a badge that appears on Local Services Ads after Google verifies a contractor’s license, insurance and background checks. You pay per lead, not per click, and Google may refund customers if a job goes wrong. They show above the Map Pack but are rented: when you stop paying, the badge and the leads stop.

How Google Guaranteed Works

Google Guaranteed is the badge. Local Services Ads (LSA) are the ad product that carries it. Here is the sequence.

  1. You apply and get verified. Google checks your business license where one is required, your insurance, and background checks on the owner and, in many categories, the technicians. Requirements vary by trade and by state.
  2. Your ad appears at the top of the search results. For searches like “emergency plumber near me,” LSA sits above the Map Pack and above regular Google Ads, with the green checkmark badge.
  3. You pay when a lead arrives. A lead is typically a phone call, message, or booking request from a real customer in your service area. You set a budget, and Google charges per qualifying lead rather than per click.
  4. You can dispute bad leads. Wrong number, wrong service, outside your area, spam. Google lets you dispute invalid leads, and credited leads are refunded. You have to actually do it, though, and most contractors never check.

The “guarantee” part is a customer protection. If a customer is unhappy with a job from an LSA lead, Google’s program can reimburse them, up to a cap Google publishes on its help page. Check the current terms there, because the amount and conditions change. It protects the homeowner. It is not a promise to you that leads will turn into booked jobs.

What Affects Where You Appear

Google lists factors like proximity to the customer, review score and count, how quickly you respond, and your business hours. Notice the overlap with organic Map Pack ranking. The profile you build for free feeds the ad you pay for. If your Google Business Profile is thin, your paid placement is weaker too.

What It Costs: The $10-a-Day Math

Cost per lead depends on your trade, your metro, and the time of year. Google shows a price range for your category and area when you sign up. As a rough planning range, our estimate is $20 to $100 or more per lead, with emergency trades in large metros at the high end.

LSA budgets are set weekly, but daily math is easier to picture. Here is what a budget buys at two assumed lead prices. These are illustrations using our estimates, not Google figures, and they count leads, not booked jobs.

Daily budgetApprox. monthly spendLeads at $40 eachLeads at $100 each
$10$3047.63.0
$25$76019.07.6
$50$1,52038.015.2
$100$3,04076.030.4

Not every lead is a job. If you close half of your leads at an average ticket of $400, 7.6 leads is about $1,520 in revenue from $304 in spend. At $100 per lead, 3 leads closing at half is $600 on the same $304. Your close rate and ticket size decide whether it works, so run your own numbers before you scale.

Owned vs. Rented: Where Google Guaranteed Fits

The question to ask about any marketing channel is whether it builds something you keep. Here is how three Google channels compare.

Google Business ProfileLocal Services AdsGoogle Ads (search)
Cost modelFree (time only)Pay per leadPay per click
You keep it if you stop payingYesNoNo
Reviews and history build upYesPartlyNo
Ranks on its own over timeYesNoNo

The first column compounds. Each review, photo, and service listing you add makes the profile stronger next month. The other two reset to zero the moment billing stops. That is why we recommend building the owned asset first. Our guide on how to rank higher on Google Maps walks through the full checklist, and our Google Business Profile guide covers setup.

When Google Guaranteed Is Worth It

Honest answer: it is worth it more often than contractors who hate paid ads admit, and less often than the sales reps say. It tends to fit when:

  • You have capacity today. If your crew is booked three weeks out, buying more leads just creates a backlog.
  • You run emergency or high-ticket work. A single water heater replacement or roof repair can cover a month of lead costs.
  • Your organic profile is still young. LSA can fill the gap while reviews and rankings build, which takes months.
  • You answer the phone. Responsiveness affects ranking, and a missed lead is a paid-for lead wasted.

It tends to disappoint when you cannot answer calls quickly, when your close rate is low, or when you are using it as a replacement for a real profile and website instead of an addition to them.

If you started with Angi or Thumbtack, that made sense when you had nothing else. LSA is a different product, but it runs on the same logic: you rent access, and when you stop paying, the flow stops.

You Can Set This Up Yourself

Applying for LSA takes an hour or two of paperwork, then a few weeks of verification. After that it needs a few minutes a week: checking leads, disputing bad ones, and keeping your budget and hours current. If you would rather have it handled, Contractor Bear builds the owned channels first (your profile, your reviews, your site) and adds paid placement on top once the numbers justify it, starting at $500/mo. Everything we build is yours to keep when you leave.

How to Get Started the Right Way

  1. Fix your Google Business Profile first. Complete every field, confirm categories, and upload real photos. Our Map Pack guide shows what to prioritize.
  2. Collect documents. Business license, proof of insurance, and a list of staff who will need background checks.
  3. Apply and verify. Follow Google’s prompts and expect a wait.
  4. Start with a modest weekly budget. Watch lead quality for a few weeks before raising it.
  5. Answer every call. Use call tracking and a backup number so nothing goes to voicemail.
  6. Dispute junk leads weekly. Make it a habit.
  7. Track booked jobs, not leads. The only number that matters is revenue per dollar spent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is $10 a day enough for Google Ads?

For regular Google Ads in most contractor niches, usually not. At roughly $304 a month and an estimated $15 to $75 per click, you would get about 4 to 20 clicks. With an estimated 5 to 10 percent turning into leads, that is between zero and two leads a month. It is enough to test, not enough to build a pipeline.

How to promote your business locally for free?

Start with the owned channels. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, then ask every happy customer for a review. Add Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, keep your name, address and phone number identical across directories, and publish service pages on your own website. Branded trucks, yard signs, and asking for referrals cost almost nothing and work.

The Short Version

Google Guaranteed is a verified, pay-per-lead ad. It can bring in real jobs, especially when you have crew capacity and the phone gets answered. But it is rented. Build the profile, the reviews, and the website first, because those keep working when the ad budget stops.

If you want those built for you, see our pricing. The free custom website comes with the Black tier at $1,500/mo, and you keep it whether you stay with us or not. You own what we build.
